Niikappu is pronounced "nee-KAH-poo" and is located in Hokkaido's Hidaka region. Rather than walking only around the town center, it is better suited to sightseeing by car with specific destinations in mind.

Farms and grazing fields spread across the town, where racehorses are bred and raised. Farms are working properties, so visitors must check which places can be viewed and follow the applicable rules.

The Niikappu Record Museum in the town center offers exhibits of vinyl records and gramophones, along with opportunities to listen to music. It is an entry point to a side of Niikappu's culture beyond horses.

Niikappu Is Not One Large, Continuous Tourist District

Destinations are spread out, including the roadside station and Record Museum in the town center, farm scenery around Takae, and the hot spring and riding facility around Nishihakutsu. Choose two or three themes that interest you and enjoy the changing views of the sea, farms, and hills while traveling between them.

For a First Visit, Build Around Horses, Music, and the Hot Spring

For a half day, combine the roadside station and Record Museum with Thoroughbred Ginza. For a full day, add a reserved riding experience or the hot spring to learn about the town without overloading the schedule.

Destinations in Niikappu are divided among the roadside station and Record Museum in the town center, farm scenery around Takae, and horse riding and the hot spring around Nishihakutsu. Because this is not a city where attractions continue one after another on foot, grouping places in the same direction and traveling by car makes planning easier.

Trying to cover horses, music, the hot spring, and nature all in one day can leave you rushing around opening hours and reservations. A realistic plan is to focus on two themes, such as horse-country scenery and the Record Museum, and use the roadside station for information and a break.

Prepare for a Rural Stay

Do not assume that shops and transportation are available as frequently as they are in a major city. Check opening hours, fuel, meals, charging options, and weather in advance. In winter or bad weather, reduce the schedule on the assumption that travel will take longer.

Rather than increasing the number of stops, keeping to opening hours and daylight allows you to experience Niikappu's scenery and culture at a calmer pace. If you reserve horse riding, organize the rest of the day around that time.

Choosing a Base Makes the Itinerary More Stable

When touring Niikappu and nearby areas, dividing each day's direction from the location of your accommodation can reduce driving strain compared with making long round trips every day. Set the check-in time and evening plan first, and place outdoor stops during daylight.

Without a Car, Narrow the Area You Cover

When visiting by public transportation, do not try to follow a car-based model itinerary unchanged. Limit the trip to one area, such as the town center, and check current information for stops, connections, the final service, and how to reach each facility.
